2/26/2002 - We have greatly improved our webring code on member site detection. Previously, our code had problems identifying 3D-Ring members due to the variance in the URL and as a result, the Webring Console that pops up does not list the member site in the "current site" field. We request our webring members to test the code on their pages to ensure there aren't any bugs. Please report any bugs to 3d-ring@consolewar.com. 2/25/2002 - A search engine has been added to the Webring section. Now you can search through the list of webring members and look for stuff like "3D gallery" and "free textures". 1/23/2002 - The Webring Members page now features a Hits Received counter. This keeps track of the number of hits member sites receive either through the Webring Console or the Webring Members page itself.
3D-RING Webring
Together with the site relaunch, 3D-RING.org is proud to present the new 3D-RING Webring. The old webring is one of the biggest and most popular webrings on Webring.org. At its peak, it had over 3000 member sites and is the biggest webring for 3D related content.
Webring.org was eventually bought over by Yahoo! and many things changed after that. Yahoo! made a claim that copyright content on all webring sites belonged to them and although they retracted this later on, the damage was done as hundreds of sites pulled out from the webring in protest.
Furthermore, we were far from pleased with Yahoo!'s implementation of the webring system. We no longer had control over the HTML code fragment or the look of the webring links. The management tools were poor and Yahoo! was unresponsive to our problems.
Hence we made the decision to build our own webring engine and correct all that was wrong with the Yahoo! webring. In the process we improvised and created many new exciting features for our own webring including:
- The HTML fragment that members display on their site contains no site id number. All sites uses the same code but our webring engine determines the member site and displays the correct links.
- The new webring uses the new 3D-RING WebConsole® that pops up whenever someone clicks on the webring code on the member pages. The WebConsole® contains the familiar webring links (ie. previous, next, random) and automatically updates itself as you surf on our webring. This solves the problem of looking for the webring code as you move from site-to-site.
- New registration process that helps eliminate the problem of wrongly entered member site URLs which causes bad links and delays in member approval.
However, the new webring will be nothing without the members. Therefore if you are an existing or ex-member of the 3D-RING Webring, please transfer over to the new ring by re-registering your site. Please support the new webring.
